The Mystery of Wu Song’s Tomb in West Lake

Wu Song hated him so much that he hid himself in Cai’s house with a sword, and when Cai went out, he stabbed him, killing him on the spot, and Wu Song himself was captured by the army and died in prison. The local people were grateful to him for his courage in fighting for the people, so they built a tomb for him and erected a monument “Tomb of Wu Song, the Righteous Soldier of Song”.

Wu Song’s tomb was originally located at Chung Jin Men in Hangzhou. In 1894, Hangzhou workers dug out the coffin when repairing the city wall, and it was written on the coffin as “Wu Song’s coffin”. Later, the three Shanghai tycoons Du Yuesheng, Huang Jinrong, and Zhang Xiaolin together funded the reconstruction of Wu Song’s tomb, and the names of Huang, Zhang, and Du were also written on the tomb. However, it was destroyed in the 1964 campaign to level the graves, and it is said that when the tomb was opened there were rotten coffins and white bones, which were filled into the bone urns by the workers and transported to the mass burials in the Chicken Cage Mountain by automobiles together with the other skeletons demolished by the West Lake.

In 2004, in order to fully explore the West Lake of the successive generations of traditional cultural celebrities, in the majority of the public tourists’ requirements and experts and scholars on the basis of the argument, decided at the original site according to the old photos of Wu Song’s Tomb for the restoration of reconstruction, is the way we see now.
